On March 1, 1890 the Sandy Creek Missionary Baptist Church, which is now known as the First Baptist Church of Eldorado, was organized. It was organized with 5 members and Rev. H.J.E. Williams was the first pastor. The church met in the "old rock school building" located in the southwest part of Eldorado near the Sandy Creek. (The Sandy Creek was the baptismal place for the church for many years.) The church moved to its current location (812 West Main Street) after the completion of the current brick structure in 1948. In 1901 the name of the church was changed to the Eldorado Missionary Baptist Church and construction of a new church building was begun with completion during the year of 1907. Records indicate that the first Sunday School program was begun in 1905 under the pastorate of Rev. Nelson West. In 1948 the congregation voted to construct a new building at a new site, where it is now located. The new church with its balcony seating had an estimated capacity of 500 and had as one of its special additions a beautiful sanctuary baptistry (which even today, 2004, is still in use by the local church and loaned to area churches who have no baptistry). In 1951 the church built a new parsonage and in 1958 a new educational wing was added. In recent years the church had a total remodel of the sanctuary, and opened a beautiful prayer room (named the MaryOma Prayer Room) that is open 24 hrs a day to the community of Eldorado and all visitors for their quiet time and prayer needs. The church today believes the same as Rev.J.O. Cash when he wrote in his record of the church's history and growth during the early 1930s: "we have endeavored to build upon the foundation so wisely laid by all [our] noble predessors....[this church] is steady building upon [those] other foundations." We are grateful for the work done so diligently by those before us and strive just as diligently to continue what they have begun so that only Christ will be glorified.
